Carpal Tunnel Syndrome::
Class IV High Power Laser Therapy (HPLT) Treatment
The Problem: Nerves Do Not Have an External Blood Supply
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is the most commonly referenced Repetitive Motion Injury – a category of conditions that represent the fastest growing segment of injuries in American society today. Many factors have been blamed on this recent epidemic including increased computer usage, poor ergonomics, and improper medical treatment that is focused on symptom masking and not on prevention or correction

The term carpal tunnel refers to a tunnel formed by bones of the wrist through which nerves and tendons pass as they travel from the forearm to the hand. Nerves that become “pinched” at the carpal tunnel can create numbness, tingling or burning pain in the hand.
Unlike other tissues in the body, nerves do not have an external blood supply. Therefore, the blood vessels that are responsible for feeding the nerve itself are actually located WITHIN the nerve. This makes the nerve VERY vulnerable to both trauma and repetitive motion injuries. When the nerve becomes impinged the blood supply that feeds the nerve also becomes “pinched off”. Without this blood the nerve cell does not receive its supply of oxygen and glucose which are needed for the cell to create it own energy for healing.
In other words:
NO OXYGEN + NO GLUCOSE ⇒ NO ENERGY ⇒ NO HEALING.
The Solution: Laser Therapy Delivers Energy Directly to the Injured Nerve Cells
Class IV High Power Laser Therapy bypasses the blood stream altogether and delivers the much-needed energy directly into the powerhouses (mitochondria) of the injured nerve cells. The focused, high-energy infrared waves stimulate the mitochondria to produce the vitally important healing energy called ATP. The photochemical process does not rely on oxygen or glucose and, therefore, completely bypasses the arterial “highway” that was damaged as a result of the Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. We can simplify this concept as follows:
LASER STIMULATION OF MITOCHONDRIA ⇒ ENERGY PRODUCTION (ATP) ⇒ HEALING
It is like LifeFlight for injured nerves. LifeFlight bypasses heavy traffic to deliver the much needed medical aid directly to the scene of the accident.
Is Surgery Effective at Treating Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?
Surgical procedures have been developed over the years to “release” the pressure on the nerves at the carpal tunnel by permanently severing the ligament that holds the tunnel together. Unfortunately, these procedures are rarely successful over the long term and almost never address the cause of the nerve irritation. Common sense would tell us that it is unlikely that the carpal tunnel would simply “shrink” without warning. Therefore, increasing the size of the tunnel will only provide temporary benefit especially if the tendons within the tunnel continue to thicken. Also, post-surgical scar tissue can also interfere with proper wrist and nerve function contributing to more pressure on the nerve.
