Degenerative Disc Disease:: Class IV High Power Laser Therapy (HPLT) TreatmentAnatomy:: Spinal DiscThe spinal disc (intervertebral disc) is a fibrous elastic, gel-filled cushion that functions as a shock absorber between the vertebrae of the spine. In its healthy state, the disc expands the space between the vertebrae and helps create an open pathway for the nerves as they branch off the spinal cord and travel into the body. A collapsed, rigid or bulging disc is the primary cause of “pinched” nerves. When nerves are pinched, they cannot send clear pain free messages to the body. A pinched nerve also distorts the critical messages organs and muscles are trying to send back to the brain. What is Degenerative Disc Disease?Discs can be injured as a result of the trauma due to accidents. They can also degenerate over time. Repeated heavy lifting, an awkward twist, a fall or car accident can set off the sequence of events that result in Degenerative Disc Disease. Patients with “bad discs” often experience spinal pain and pain that radiates into the arms or legs. Left untreated, patients with damaged discs can develop weakness, loss of muscle control and unrelenting pain.
The Problem: Spinal Discs Do Not Have a Blood SupplyUnlike other tissues in the body, the spinal discs do not have a direct blood supply. Without a blood supply the outer covering of the disc (annulus fibrosis) tends to become brittle and pain sensitive. Any subsequent trauma makes the situation worse. This is because trauma causes inflammation and muscle rigidity. These factors combine to produce increased pressure on the disc and prevent the disc from pulling in the fluids needed to keep it inflated (a process called imbibition). The Solution: Class IV Laser Therapy Softens the Disc to Allow Oxygen & Nutrients into the DiscLaser therapy softens the disc and reactivates the process of imbibition. It does this by stimulating the powerhouse (the mitochondria) within the cells of the disc. The laser delivers light energy directly into photo receptors within the cells. The mitochondria convert this light energy into biologic energy (adenosine triphosphate, ATP). This energy is used to improve the elasticity of the disc and restore the exchange of fluids needed to “plump up” the deflated disc (imbibition).
